Iranian identity is manifested in various Iranian traditions, including religious traditions, an important example of which is Muharram mourning rituals. To examine how the visual identity of these rituals corresponds to their religious identity, this article explores this relationship in two such rituals: alam-bardari (“banner bearing”) and nakhl-gardani (“palm tree bearing”). To that end, this descriptive-analytical study matches the visual elements of the two rituals with either of the five aspects of religious identity, namely the emotional, doctrinal, ritualistic, epistemological, and consequential. It finds that the visual language of the elements, symbols, and visual structures used in the alam and nakhl — the eponymous structures carried in the rituals — is primarily doctrinal and epistemological when viewed in isolation. However, when these structures appear in the presence of mourners during the rituals, they come to represent the emotional and consequential aspects. In other words, the latter two aspects are not inherently evident in the alam and nakhl but rather manifest during the rituals.
