Zoroastrian religious tradition is integral to Iranology, preserving Iran's cultural roots. Among Zoroastrian texts, the Gahan holds a unique status, regarded as the core and potentially containing Zoroaster's direct words. Investigating Gahan's connection to the religious tradition of its time is crucial. Linguistic and historical studies reveal differences between the Gahan and other Avesta parts in language and content. This raises the question: Is Zoroaster's message in the Gahan novel or continuous with contemporary religious tradition? This article employs qualitative content analysis to categorize the diverse opinions of ten 20th-century Western Iranologists on this question. Two general traditions emerge: Gahan as a break or continuity in Zoroastrian religious tradition. Distinguishing factors include occasional conceptual innovation, changes in belief systems, influence from socio-political conditions, lack of innovation, structural and conceptual similarity with previous traditions, and development of existing concepts. The resulting categorization informs future Gahan research and serves as a framework for identifying its characteristics.
